September's Artist of the Month, Amelia Smith of Mountainside Designs

Hey there, I'm the one who makes all this stuff. I'm Amelia, the metalsmith behind every piece of handcrafted jewelry you'll find on this site, under Mountainside Designs. In 2014 I moved from Asheville, NC to Bozeman, MT and instantly fell in love with the Western aesthetic. While scouring the local antique and pawn shops I became inspired by the gorgeous, vintage Navajo squash blossom necklaces, silver and turquoise rings, and traditional hand stamped bracelets. I have that true DIY-er attitude, so upon discovering my love of this Southwestern-style jewelry I thought, "I could figure out how to make that" - so I did. I'm a completely self-taught metalsmith which at times has been challenging, but overcoming these frustrations and developing my own technique is what has given my jewelry its distinctive style. I draw inspiration from traditional Navajo and Southwestern jewelry designs but mix in a modern and bohemian flair.

Made with love in Montana.

I create all my jewelry pieces start to finish in my home studio in Bozeman along with the support of my husband and two sweet pups. From sawing the backplates from sterling silver sheet to soldering and finally setting the stones, every piece of Mountainside Designs Jewelry is completely handcrafted by me.

Due to the nature of my organic creation process, slight imperfections and are part of my jewelry style and should be loved as they are a true sign of a handmade piece.
