Meet Jessica and Jillian of Pigment Project
Jillian and Jessica have both called Helena home for many years. Originally, Jillian comes from Central California, and Jessica comes from the Black Hills of South Dakota.
What do you make?
We create unique, color and pattern-driven loom beaded earrings, made simply with string and seed beads.
Where do you create?
We each have our own little nooks within our homes for beading, but you'll often find a loom in our bags on our camping or backing packing trips.
What else have you done, other than being an artist?
Both Jillian and Jessica studied graphic design in college, and started their careers in the field. Jillian now works as a wine sales rep, and Jessica is the creative mind behind Biomimicry 3.8.
What inspires you?
We often discuss the scenes from our upbringings as inspiration, as well as our training in pattern making, color theory, and creating iconic imagery through art. Travel inspires us, as does the ever-changing Montana landscape.
What's the hardest thing about being an artist?
The hardest thing is finding enough hours in the day! Loom beading is a time intensive project itself, but a labor of love and we're happy to do it. We try to continually create fresh and interesting patterns and improve quality, but keeping up with bookkeeping, marketing, website updates, and most of all, stock, is always a juggling act.
How do you combat creative blocks?
We give ourselves breaks when we need it. Sometimes it's nice to push yourself to create then to allow for some time off to recharge. Seeing each other's work helps one idea springboard off another.
What makes you feel alive?
Jillian: bikes, books, adventures abroad, warm days, good friends, and of course, good wine.
Jessica: soaking up the sun while picnicking, good conversations with new acquaintances, beach days, and any activity that involves water.
Who (or what or where) warms your heart?
Jillian's heart is warmed by her husband and four-legged fur baby.
